County Durham is a county of contrasts: the remote and sparsely populated dales and moors of the Pennines in the center and West, while East side of the county is highly urbanised, and was once dominated by coal mining. The County Town is Durham but there are larger cities and towns, some of them now Unitary Authorities and therefore part of the Traditional County but now self governing. The larger towns include Hartlepool, Peterlee, Seaham, Chester Le Street, Stanley, Newton Aycliffe and Pennymoor. In the west of the county the largest towns are Stanhope, Middleton in Teesdale, Barnard Castle and Wolsingham.

County Durham is served by road routes that run mainly south to north. The A167 runs from Newton Aycliffe through Durham to Chester Le Street. The A1(M) runs parallel through Sedgefield and Newton Aycliffe to Chester Le Street. Along the coast the A19 links Hartlepool, Peterlee and Seaham. The main east/west route is A689 from Bishop Auckland to Stanhope and then over the Pennines into Cumbria. The A67 joins Bowes in the south to Barnard Castle and Bishop Auckland.
